    EPA Day
    Time:
    Venue: LeMoyne-Owen College
    Organization: Volunteer Odyssey

EPA Day is an intensive outreach event that will encompass workshops for college students, a panel discussion, an elementary school fair, and a luncheon. Volunteers are needed to serve as guides for the 175 4th grade students that will be participating from Cromwell and Oakhaven Elementary Schools.

Volunteers will need to arrive no later than 8:45am to get familiar with the set up. Each volunteer will lead a group of 15 students to each booth at the Fair to ensure no activity is missed and make sure the event flows smoothly.

EPA Day is part of the Lead- Based Paint RRP project whose goals are to:
    1. Change the current permitting process in municipalities so that contractors are required to show that they are EPA certified before receiving a permit to do renovations on target housing. 2. Educate families of the dangers of lead in their homes and child-occupied facilities so that they can spot the signs and symptoms of lead poisoning in children. 3. Provide outreach via webinars, in person training, and online tools to educate community leaders, elected officials, and contractors on what RRP is and how practicing lead safe techniques lead to building communities that enrich people’s lives.

Memphis Green Drinks "Green Volunteer Soapbox"
    Time:
    Venue: Memphis Botanic Garden
    Organization: Volunteer Odyssey

The Memphis chapter of Green Drinks, an international network of people who are interested in environmental issues and who meet monthly to socialize and network, is planning a “Green Volunteer Soapbox” event on Tuesday, April 19 (three days before Earth Day) at the Memphis Botanic Garden (750 Cherry Road), where attendees can learn about volunteer opportunities at local environmental nonprofit organizations like the Wolf River Conservancy, Shelby Farms Conservancy and Clean Memphis. The event, which is open to the public, will start at 6:30pm and will include a cash bar.

This event is also part of the Memphis Botanic Garden’s “Earth Month at the Garden”, supported by International Paper, when the Garden is hosting family fun events and educational programs to teach people simple ways to green their lifestyle. More information about “Earth Month at the Garden” can be found at http://www.memphisbotanicgarden.com/earthmonth.

This will be a great way for Memphians to get involved with local organizations that are making the Mid-South a more sustainable place to live. There will also be a short presentation by Keith Cole, Executive Director of the Wolf River Conservancy, on the status of the Wolf River Greenway project that will eventually extend a total of 30 miles to connect neighborhoods all the way from downtown Memphis through the cities of Germantown and Collierville.
